"Blue Leaves is dark and full of diamonds. It's a marvelous maniacal tragicomedy, full of waggish merriment, razor sharp in its mordant wit but never cutting out the hearts of its characters, or turning away from their keen aches."
-Michael Malone, The Nation
Profile Theatre is honored to close our 2007-2008 season with the celebrated and award-winning John Guare play, The House of Blue Leaves, guest directed by Don Alder. Set in Queens, New York in 1965 during Pope Paul VI's visit, Guare's antic farce and the playwright's initial major success brings to life a collection of eccentric characters: a middle-aged zookeeper (Ted Roisum) who aspires to be a Hollywood songwriter, his manic depressive wife (Sarah Lucht), a love who shares his dreams of stardom (Trisha Todd). Full of family humiliations and resentments, Guare posits that the family home and the mental institution are more alike than we may think. Consistently hailed as Guare's most important and popular play, The House of Blue Leaves won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play in 1971 and four Tony Awards for its 1986 Lincoln Center Theater revival.
All Profile Theatre performances are held at Theatre! Theatre!, 3430 SE Belmont Street, Portland, OR 97214.
